The Kids in the Hall: Comedy Punks

1h 35m Documentary, Comedy 2022

Through never-before-seen archival footage, this two-part documentary delves into this famed comedy troupe’s post-punk origins and provides inside access to their tumultuous 40-year journey across five seasons of their renowned television series, cult star-status, a controversial feature film, multiple sold-out tours and their recently announced reboot for Prime Video.

The Kids In The Hall first appeared in the mid-1980s as a noisy by-product of the post-punk era. Children of the Sixties who came of age in the Seventies, Mark McKinney, Dave Foley, Bruce McCulloch, Kevin McDonald and openly gay Scott Thompson came together at a tiny cabaret theatre on Toronto’s Queen Street West club strip. Week after week, they pulled fresh sketches out of the air, developed new characters, and forged a unique comedy voice that was as disruptive as any of the punk bands playing at the rock clubs next door. Over the next ten years, the troupe snatched the torch from their comedy heroes - Monty Python’s Flying Circus, SCTV, and Saturday Night Live and ran with it. Over the course of five seasons of television and one controversial feature film for Paramount Pictures, The Kids went on to inspire their peers and subsequent generations of sketch comedians and even continues to endure - through sold out tours and, in 2022, a full-on reboot of their series for Amazon. The Kids In The Hall: Comedy Punks is a wild and poignant story of cultural revolution wrapped in highly intelligent comedy and delivered by a long-standing band of brothers who never have taken themselves too seriously.

Featuring interviews with Lorne Michaels, Mike Myers, Fred Armisen, Janeane Garofalo, Eddie Izzard, Lauren Ash, Jay Baruchel, Lewis Black, Mae Martin, Eric McCormack, Matt Walsh and Reggie Watts, as well as industry insiders and fans, the documentary explores how the group’s comedy grew to inspire both their fans and subsequent generations of sketch comedians.
